Discover Additional Techniques to Enhance Your Well-Being

Updated: Dec 17, 2024

Chiropractic care extends beyond spinal adjustments, offering a variety of specialized techniques designed to address specific conditions and optimize your recovery. Let’s explore some of the additional techniques we use to promote pain relief, improve mobility, and restore balance in the body.

Active Release Technique (ART)

Releasing Tension and Breaking Adhesions

This technique targets tight or dysfunctional muscles by combining patient movement with precise pressure from the practitioner. Initially, the chiropractor shortens the muscle fibers while applying pressure and then stretches them. ART helps relax tissues and breaks down myofascial adhesions or fibrosis, improving flexibility and restoring normal muscle function.

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

This method employs a specialized metal tool with a thin, non-sharp edge to identify and treat irregularities in the fascia and muscles. The tool "sands" down adhesions and scar tissue in the fascia, enabling smooth muscle contraction without friction. This technique also promotes better blood flow, reduces swelling, and accelerates healing, making it particularly effective for tendinopathies, sprains, and myofascial syndromes.

Neurodynamics / Neural Mobilization

This gentle method is ideal for nerve impingement cases, such as double-crush syndrome or post-herniated disc recovery. Even after resolving the primary issue, nerves can remain irritated, causing lingering numbness or tingling sensations. Neurodynamics works by gently mobilizing the nerves and surrounding tissues, reducing adhesions and improving impulse transmission throughout the nerve pathway.

Nimmo Receptor Tonus Technique

A focused approach to relaxing muscles and alleviating trigger points, this technique uses sustained pressure for 5–7 seconds on sensitive areas. This interrupts the pain-tension cycle and reduces chronic muscle tightness. Some patients may experience brief muscle spasms during treatment, followed by lasting relief.

Kinesiotaping

Kinesiotaping is a versatile technique using elastic cotton tape applied to specific body areas. Depending on the tension during application, it can stabilize hypermobile joints, reduce pain, drain fluids, and improve posture. These tapes stimulate beneficial neurological responses, enhancing mobility and adaptability, making them popular among athletes and those needing joint support.

Speeder (Thompson Technique Resource)

The speeder device facilitates high-velocity, low-amplitude adjustments, similar to the Thompson Technique, which uses a drop table mechanism. By harnessing Newtonian physics, this method applies a gentle thrust to correct joint misalignments while minimizing muscle resistance. The drop piece absorbs the force, ensuring the adjustment is precise and effective. This method is excellent for patients requiring lighter adjustments, such as those with osteoporosis or severe muscle tension.

These additional techniques showcase the diverse approaches we use to address your unique needs, whether you’re seeking pain relief, improved mobility, or enhanced performance. Each method is designed to complement your chiropractic care, ensuring a holistic path to recovery and wellness.
